BenQ Projector Lamp Replacement Guide
BenQ has built a strong reputation for DLP projectors in both the home theater and business segments — known for reliable optics, sharp image quality, and competitive pricing. Replacement lamps for BenQ projectors are widely available, but navigating the part number system and understanding the options takes a little knowledge.
BenQ's Lamp Part Number System
BenQ designates most of its replacement lamps with the 5J series prefix, followed by a longer alphanumeric code. Examples include 5J.J0A05.001, 5J.J4R05.001, and 5J.J9H05.001. The full part number is the reliable identifier — the first few characters alone don't uniquely identify the lamp.
Some older BenQ and OEM-rebadged models use SP series designations (SP.8LG01GC01, for example). These appear more frequently on BenQ models that were also sold under the Dukane or Viewsonic brands as rebadged products.
To find your lamp part number:
- Check the label on the lamp module itself (accessible via the lamp door)
- Look in your projector's menu under Info or Lamp
- Cross-reference your projector's model number — printed on the bottom of the chassis — with a compatibility chart
DLP vs. LCD: Does It Matter for Lamp Replacement?
BenQ uses DLP (Digital Light Processing) technology in its projectors rather than LCD. From a lamp replacement standpoint, this makes no practical difference — both DLP and LCD projectors use the same UHP or UHE mercury arc lamp technology. The lamp module is unique to the projector model regardless of display technology.
Where DLP does matter: DLP projectors are more sensitive to dust contamination on the optical path than LCD projectors. When replacing your BenQ lamp, avoid opening the projector in dusty environments, and don't touch the color wheel or DMD chip area.
BenQ Home Theater vs. Business Lamps
BenQ's home theater projectors (W series, HT series) typically use 240–280W UHP lamps with rated lives of 3,000–4,000 hours standard / 5,000–6,000 hours eco. These are higher-wattage lamps optimized for high brightness and accurate color.
BenQ's business and education projectors (MX, MS, MW series) often use lower-wattage lamps (150–200W) with longer rated lives — 6,000–10,000 hours in eco mode on some models. These are designed for duty cycles where the projector runs many hours per day.
Compatible Lamp Quality for BenQ
The aftermarket for BenQ lamps is mature and well-supplied. Quality compatible lamps using Philips or Osram UHP bulbs are available for virtually every BenQ model and perform well in home theater and business applications. As with all compatible lamps, buy from a supplier who discloses the bulb brand and offers a warranty.
Avoid purchasing BenQ OEM lamps from marketplace sellers at prices significantly below authorized retail — counterfeits using BenQ packaging are documented in this product category.
Resetting the Lamp Timer on BenQ Projectors
After replacing your BenQ lamp, reset the timer via Menu → System Setup: Advanced → Lamp Settings → Reset Lamp Timer. Confirm when prompted. The exact menu path varies slightly by model — refer to your manual if this path doesn't match.
