The Bandit Intimidator 21XP is the largest hand-fed drum chipper in the Bandit lineup, built for the most demanding tree removal and land clearing operations. It runs a Caterpillar C7.1 Tier 4 Final diesel with a full DOC + DPF aftertreatment system. High-production duty stresses the emissions system hard. Why Catalytic Converters Fail on This Machine
The Cat C7.1 runs a more capable aftertreatment stack than smaller Tier 4 engines, but it faces the same fundamental challenge in chipping service. Intermittent high-load operation followed by shutdown prevents the DPF from completing passive regen cycles. Plugged filters force active regen at the worst times — often when the machine is sitting between jobs — and repeated thermal cycling cracks the substrate. Left unaddressed, a degraded DOC/DPF reduces engine efficiency and triggers derate events that take the machine out of service.
