Carlton Apache 2518 Diesel Catalytic Converter Rebuild
The Carlton Apache 2518 is an 18-inch capacity drum chipper with a massive 25-inch by 18-inch infeed opening built for whole-tree processing. Diesel versions run a John Deere Tier 4 Final turbocharged diesel (140 HP or 173 HP) with DOC/DPF aftertreatment. Large-capacity production chipping stresses this emissions system significantly. Why Catalytic Converters Fail on This Machine
John Deere Tier 4 Final engines use an integrated exhaust filter (IEF) combining DOC and DPF functions. The system is designed for continuous-duty applications, not the stop-start cycle of a brush chipper. Frequent cold starts and short run times prevent the filter from reaching passive regen temperature, leading to progressive soot loading. When the filter plugs, backpressure codes appear and chipping performance drops. Ash loading from normal oil consumption also contributes to filter plugging over time.
