Why Catalytic Converters Fail on This Machine
The Cat C7.1 runs a more capable aftertreatment stack than smaller Tier 4 engines, but it faces the same fundamental challenge in chipping service. Intermittent high-load operation followed by shutdown prevents the DPF from completing passive regen cycles. Plugged filters force active regen at the worst times — often when the machine is sitting between jobs — and repeated thermal cycling cracks the substrate. Left unaddressed, a degraded DOC/DPF reduces engine efficiency and triggers derate events that take the machine out of service.
