Why Catalytic Converters Fail on This Machine
The Deutz D2.9L uses a DOC and DPF combination for Tier 4 compliance. It's a compact, efficient engine, but the emissions system is sensitive to operating conditions. Wood chipper duty — variable load, frequent starts and stops — limits passive regen opportunities, allowing soot to accumulate. As loading increases, exhaust restriction rises and fuel economy drops. Ash from oil consumption adds to the load over time, and substrate damage from thermal cycling is the most common failure mode on high-hour machines.
