Why Catalytic Converters Fail on This Machine
Cummins Tier 4 aftertreatment combines a diesel oxidation catalyst, diesel particulate filter, and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system. The stop-start, high-load cycle of a wood chipper is one of the most demanding duty profiles for this system. Soot accumulates in the DPF faster than passive regen can clear it. Missed or interrupted active regen cycles lead to progressive plugging. The SCR urea injector is also vulnerable to crystallization during extended storage between jobs. Substrate cracking from thermal shock during forced regen is common on high-hour machines.
